ISLAMABAD: After the Supreme Court verdict allowing the return of the Sharif family, mobile phone users sent 30 million text messages on Thursday. Representatives of mobile phone companies told The News that their networks were overloaded, with the congestion peaking at 5pm after the SC decision. Mobile phone users from different parts of the country reported problems in connecting their voice calls and sending text messages. A senior official from a leading mobile phone company said that it was the second highest number of text messages sent in a single day after the 40 million texts sent after the reinstatement of Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry.
PIMS professor a candidate for president

ISLAMABAD: A professor at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences has approached the chief election commissioner with the aim to contest the forthcoming election for the president. Prof Dr Anwar ul Haque, who has been heading the PIMS Department of Pathology for the last 10 years, told The News by the telephone on Thursday that if Musharraf could contest the polls while in service, he could also do so. In a letter to the CEC, the professor demanded provision of forms for filing his nomination for the post of president.
Chatta says he is not a candidate for caretaker PM
ISLAMABAD: MNA Hamid Nasir Chatta has said he is not a candidate for caretaker prime minister. Talking to journalists here, he said he wished to take part in the elections but added that news reports claiming he was being considered for the post of caretaker PM were false.
26 killed in Afghan attacks
KABUL: Insurgent attacks in southern Afghanistan left 13 people dead, 10 of them private security guards escorting a Nato supply convoy, officials said on Thursday. The defence ministry said 12 Taliban fighters and one soldier were killed on Wednesday in clashes in three parts of the country. The ambush on the Nato-supply convoy took place in southern Zabul province. A large group of Taliban attacked the trucks, killing at least 10 private security guards and destroying three vehicles, said Mohammad Salim, an official with the security company, who witnessed the attack.
Verdict raises SC prestige: Fakhr
ISLAMABAD: Counsel for the Sharif brothers Fakhruddin G Ebrahim has lauded the decision of the Supreme Court, allowing Nawaz Sharif and Shahbaz Sharif to return to Pakistan. Talking to a TV channel, he said the decision has helped elevate the prestige and respect of the Supreme Court and would help dispel any further notions and chances of emergency and martial law in the country.
