 Cholistan Festival starts
Wednesday, May 07, 2008
LAHORE

AL-HAMRA Cholistan Festival 2008 (ACF) has started providing an opportunity for the Lahorites to get rid of monotony with respect to cultural festivals besides promotion of cultural values and arts of the drought-stricken people of the desert areas of Cholistan.

Al-Hamra Art Council (AAC) has organised this festival in continuation of its annual activities related to highlight cultural values and festivities of the desert people. The festival will continue for a week with a series of performances in which artists, hailing from Cholistan desert, will show captivating artistic stints in the fields of drama, music, puppet show and folk dance.

Different stalls, enriched with typical Cholistani-cultural items ranging from dresses, silver-moulding jewelry, shawls, ivory-styled bright bangles, glossy clay studded with weeds and grass used as fodder of different animals, light footwear with classic designs to earthen-wares, are installed to make the modern-day city-bounded people of the provincial metropolis aware of the culture life of the Cholistani people.

The Lahorites, who are facing the brunt of the searing summer-season, will be welcomed by the richly-coloured clad folk dancers with riveting dhol beats on the grassy lawn of Al-hamara Art Council.

On the first day of the festival, a large number of people along with their families in cheerful mood thronged the festival while looking inquisitively at the cultural items displayed at the festival. Special seating-arrangements with at least hundred of chairs were made by the administration of LAC in the open lawn so that people could enjoy the cultural evening with Cholistani artists while showering unprecedented plaudits over their performances.

LAC Assistant Director Zulfiqar said LAC had organized the festival to promote artists of the desert areas. He said the people could enjoy their performances, and the festival would also bring a change in the cultural activities of the metropolis. He said these artists would perform till late at night with a different contour in a different atmosphere. The artists will perform in different groups, as puppet show, drama and music programmes will be held on different days.
