| Govt urged to ensure end to drone attacks |

ISLAMABAD: The parliamentary committee on national security on Tuesday urged the government to use all options to stop the drone attacks on Pakistani territory.
Chairman of the committee Mian Raza Rabbani presided over the meeting, which was attended by all its members. ANP chief Asfandyar Wali Khan, who had skipped many earlier meetings, briefed the participants on the peace deal in Swat. He informed the committee that the people have accepted the deal to bring peace in the valley of Swat and claimed it will yield positive results.
Asfandyar asked the government to stop the critics of the Swat peace deal from within the government from making any statement. Later, talking to newsmen Raza Rabbani said the committee would finalise its recommendations on drone attacks this week and would hand them over to the government. The committee will continue its meeting today.
He said the committee has already endorsed the peace deal in Swat while all political parties have also supported it, describing it as the right step. “If the Swat deal yields positive results then it would be extended to all the tribal areas,” he added. He said dialogue is the only option to resolve the issues as political parties fully support it.
Talking to newsmen after the meeting, which continued for more than three hours, Information Minister Sherry Rehman said through peace agreement in Swat only Nizam-e-Adl is being enforced. “No new law is being introduced in Swat; only the already existing laws are being enforced,” she said.
The information minister said the high court bench would be constituted in the Malakand Division. The minister said the government has prioritised the dialogue process to resolve the issue.
She brushed aside the assertion of the international pressure against the peace deal in Swat, saying Pakistan takes its own decisions. The government will honour the commitments it made in the Swat peace deal. She said only the writ of the government would be established, not the decisions of non-state actors. In reply to another question, she said all institutions are working according to the Constitution and are coordinating with each other.
