The current discussion on exporting excess sugar from Pakistan brings back memories of past challenges. Exporting too much sugar in the past left us with insufficient supply domestically, forcing us to purchase costly sugar from abroad. This negatively impacted our economy and exacerbated food affordability issues for our people. We need to be careful about exporting sugar. It might seem like a good idea to make money, but we have to think about how it affects us in the long run.
We don’t want to end up in another situation where we run out of sugar and have to rely on expensive imports. So, before we decide to export more sugar, we should make sure we have enough for ourselves. We should also think about how it will affect our consumers. Moreover, the government needs to reevaluate its agriculture export/import policy to match domestic needs and global market trends. It must also review the Minimum Support Price (MSP) mechanism to tackle implementation issues.
