The Singh High Court has directed the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) to proceed with the water supply scheme for the residents of Chanesar Town without any delay.

The court held that the residents of Chanesar Town are entitled to the water facility and directed that no discrimination should occur against the Jamshed Town inhabitants. Modifying its interim order with regard to the water supply scheme for Chanesar Town from the main Kidney Hill pumping station, a high court division bench, headed by Justice Salahuddin Panhwar, observed that if any right of the Jamshed Town is discriminated against, the court will adjudicate the issue after hearing the stakeholders.

The court was earlier informed by the KWSC that 99 per cent of work on the pipeline with regard to the water supply to Chanesar Town has been completed, and after the compilation of the pipeline, water will be supplied to Akhtar Colony, Kashmir Colony, Defence View and their adjoining areas.

Filing comments on a petition filed by the union committee chairmen of Bahadurabad and Jinnah Town against the water supply connection to Chanesar Town from the Kidney Hill pumping station, the KWSC said there are eight union councils in Chaneser Town and they are getting a water supply as usual.

The KWSC’s superintendent engineer submitted that the corporation was responsible to supply water to the city and dispose of sewage. He said the area-wise distribution of water has already been declared through schedules as per the water available in the city.

He submitted that the city’s demand for water is 1,200MGD per day, but in the present situation the KWSC is supplying 600MGD per day from different sources. The water supply to the city is 54 gallons per capita, he said.

He submitted that the KWSC was trying its best to accommodate those areas where the water supply through pipelines was not possible. He said that there was also a policy for sanctioning water connections after the fulfilment of codal formalities as per rules and there was no discrimination in supplying water to the area people.

The court had earlier directed the KWSC to submit the criteria by which water is distributed by the corporation in Karachi. It had directed the KWSC to file a report indicating the basis on which such a determination for the allocation of water is made.
