Police on Friday arrested the brother-in-law of a grade IV student and his accomplice for their alleged involvement in the kidnapping and murder of the student that took place in the Orangi Town area.

On May 8, Ubaid, a student of Grade IV, was kidnapped in the Mominabad area of Orangi. Later, his body was found in the Manghopir area. Anti-Violent Crime Cell (AVCC) SSP Zafar Siddiq said the kidnappers had demanded a ransom of Rs1.5 million from the child's family. He added that upon the directives of the Criminal Investigation Agency DIG, a special team was formed to solve the case.

The officer explained that the AVCC with the help of the Citizens-Police Liaison Committee (CPLC) arrested two suspects on technical grounds and one of the suspects was the murdered boy’s brother-in-law, Furqan. The name of the other suspect is Farhan.

The kidnapping and murder case was registered at the Mominabad police station. SSP Siddiq said the mother of the deceased child worked in Dubai and she came to Pakistan a month ago. She had money amounting to around Rs2 million.

The officer added that the key suspect was aware of the amount and he planned the kidnapping. Talking to the media, the victim’s father, Ishtiaq, said that two days ago, his child was abducted during the night hours at around 11:30pm. He added that the family received a call from the kidnappers who demanded a ransom of Rs1.5 million.

“We reported the incident to the police,” the father explained. The kidnapper disconnected the call before the conversation could conclude. “This morning (Friday morning), we received a call from police. The police informed us that our son had been killed, and his body was found in Manghopir,” the father said. “I have five children and Ubaid was the youngest.

Ishtiaq said his son-in-law was involved in the kidnapping and murder along with his friend. He demanded severe punishment be handed down to the culprits. The culprits murdered Obaid because the kidnapped child recognised his brother-in-law, police said, adding that the kidnappers demanded ransom after they had killed the child. Further investigations are under way.
