Suspect involved in buying stolen motorcycles killed in shootout
District West police claimed to have apprehended a key member of an inter-provincial motorcycle lifting gang during an alleged encounter on the night between Thursday and Friday in the Pakistan Bazaar area.
The suspect, accused of being involved in the theft of 33 per cent of the city’s stolen motorcycles and their transportation, was killed during the operation. During a press conference, District West SSP Hafeezur Rahman Bugti said the encounter took place within the jurisdiction of the Pakistan Bazaar police station. The police attempted to intercept two suspects, but they attempted to flee. In the ensuing exchange of fire, one suspect was fatally shot. The deceased suspect was identified as Ghulam Rasool Brohi, a resident of Sakran.
The officer revealed that Brohi was among the top three motorcycle lifters, having been arrested thrice and serving three years in prison. Besides involvement in motorcycle theft, he was a significant buyer, accounting for 33 per cent of the city’s stolen motorcycles, with dozens being supplied to him daily. With his demise, a notable decline in motorcycle theft was expected.
Brohi was wanted for serious charges and posed a challenge to the Karachi police. His name surfaced behind many apprehended motorcycle lifters, who utilized routes such as Northern Bypass and Manghopir for transportation. Transactions often occurred in Nooriabad hotels.
In response, the Sindh IGP coordinated with the IG Quetta to install barriers at seven points along the Northern Bypass, with officers stationed in two shifts in rural areas. Efforts are underway to secure the border between Karachi and Balochistan, including vehicle inspections.
