| Lawyers observe black day today |

ISLAMABAD: Lawyers and journalists are observing a black day throughout the country to mark the first anniversary of proclamation of emergency by former military ruler Pervez Musharraf on November 3, 2007.
In this regard, lawyers would hold protest rallies and meetings to condemn Musharraf for clamping emergency in the country by sacking 60 judges and banning around private television channels and FM radios.
The Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and the Jamaat-e-Islami have announced to support the lawyers and journalists in their call to observe November 3 as ‘the blackest day’ in the history of Pakistan.
In a statement, PFUJ General Secretary Mazhar Abbas said: “All actions taken by the former Army chief on November 3, 2007, whether against the judiciary or the media, were illegal and the government should have restored the pre-November 3 situation in the country.”
Journalists were beaten up, humiliated and detained in Karachi, Islamabad, Lahore, Peshawar, Quetta, Abbottabad and other parts of the country but the movement went on despite threats and registration of cases against journalists and the PFUJ, he recalled.
The PFUJ official said the union believed that all actions taken on November 3, 2007, including the sacking of Iftikhar Chaudhry and other judges, were illegal and unconstitutional. He demanded of the government to revive the pre-November 3 judiciary, repeal all the black laws against the media, including the controversial code of conduct of the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority, as amended on the orders of the previous government.
