MQM not under moral pressure, fear: Sattar
Sunday, November 22, 2009
By our correspondent

Karachi

Deputy Convener, Muttahida Qaumi Movement’s Coordination Committee Dr Farooq Sattar has said that the party leaders and workers are not under any kind of moral pressure or fear vis-a-vis the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) episode since the party had never indulged in corruption.

He said that there may be criminal cases against MQM members but not a single party worker or leader was facing corruption cases.

“MQM is ready to face all kinds of cases in the courts,” he declared while addressing an emergency press conference at Khursheed Memorial Hall here on Saturday.

When questioned whether the MQM would continue supporting President Asif Ali Zardari who is at the top of corruption cases’ list, Sattar said, “Altaf Hussain has suggested to all parties that they should be ready to give any big sacrifice if they have to face the cases that were withdrawn under the NRO.” However he hastily added, “You should also know that Altaf Hussain had first nominated Zardari as a presidential candidate.”

“MQM has never compromised on principles. We have a principled stand and will never support corruption,” he said while referring to the NRO.

He said that the NRO came into existence due to a deal and it was only for those who wanted relief but MQM was never a part of the deal that created NRO.

Dr Farooq Sattar said that there were two kinds of cases that were withdrawn, adding, not a single MQM leader or worker was ever involved in any corruption case, which was a pride for the party.

“Altaf Hussain has already written a letter to the Chief Justice of Supreme Court of Pakistan that those who have looted national exchequer and written off loans should be held accountable,” he added.

He said that more than 10,000 fake cases were registered against MQM men, adding , “All these cases are politically motivated. There is a big difference between a criminal case and a corruption case and people know it very well.”

He said that MQM members were ready to face trial in courts, adding that the MQM would have taken benefit before and after June 1992 state operation and had it been a part of the deal it could have taken benefit over those fake cases. “MQM did not get relief from the NRO neither it asked for it at any forum,” he said.
