Lights out
Many areas of Karachi have been facing frequent power outages, sometimes lasting for hours. The frequency and duration of power outages have increased significantly over the past few months. This has caused immense hardship to citizens, including disruption of work and business activities. Food spoilage and water scarcity due to pump failures have also become common issues. The health risks, especially for the elderly and young children, are a major concern. The increased reliance on generators has led to noise pollution and high fuel costs.
There is an urgent need to increase the electricity generation capacity to meet the growing demand and upgrade the distribution infrastructure to reduce power losses and faults. Implementing a fair and transparent load shedding schedule, with adequate notice to citizens, and exploring alternative energy sources, such as renewable energy, to reduce dependence on fossil fuels are also crucial steps.
