Urges president to honour promises now
By Shabbir Ahmed Mir
GILGIT: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) Quaid Mian Nawaz Sharif on Friday asked President Asif Ali Zardari not to make mockery of the Constitution and the public mandate, and keep the promises he (Zardari) had made to the nation.
He said this while addressing a huge public rally in Gilgit after reaching here from Hunza where he had addressed a public gathering to woo votes for the PML-N candidates contesting the forthcoming elections for the legislative assembly.
“Enough is enough Mr Zardari. I want to remind you of your promises that you had made to us and the people through the Charter of Democracy (CoD). You should now honour the public mandate and pay them back what is due,” he said, referring to the 17th Amendment, the implementation of the CoD and the trial of Pervez Musharraf.
Nawaz Sharif said it was his government that repealed the 8th Amendment and made the country prosperous, besides making it an atomic power. He said he wanted to keep the pace of progress, but a single man in uniform violated the public mandate and derailed the system.
After the return of democracy, he said, he had expected that the Constitution would be restored to its original shape and the institutions, including the judiciary, would start functioning independently but it did not happen.
“I do not mean that I should be made a prime minister again. I only want the rule of law,” he said, adding the restoration of the judiciary was made possible due to his party’s firm stand. Nawaz Sharif said he was pleased that the ruling party did not present the NRO before the National Assembly.
“When Benazir Bhutto was murdered, I visited the hospital soon after hearing the news. The PPP workers there told me to avenge the killing of Benazir. But I regret now that the PPP has forgotten its promises,” the former premier added.
About the minus-one formula, the PML Quaid said he did not believe in such formulae and the people hatching such conspiracies were the enemies of democracy. He called upon the people to protect democracy, saying he would talk to the prime minister to ensure free and fair elections in Gilgit-Baltistan.
Conveying Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif’s message to the gathering that was estimated to be more than 10,000, Nawaz said the quota of Gilgit-Baltistan students in Punjab colleges would be doubled with additional incentive of free education and hostel facilities.
Accepting a demand of people from the constituency (GB-1), he announced the construction of a bridge. He vowed to revisit the region after the formation of the PML-N government in the legislative assembly.
Earlier, PML-N Gilgit-Baltistan chapter president Hafizur Rehman, and Jaferullah also addressed the rally. Nawaz Sharif is on a three-day visit to the region. He is accompanied by Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif, Opposition Leader in National Assembly Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, former NWFP chief minister Sardar Mehtab Ahmad Khan, Senator Pervez Rasheed and PML-N spokesman Siddiqueul Farooq.
