ECP postpones reserved seats polls
Karachi
The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Thursday announced postponement of local bodies’ polls on reserved seats in Sindh, scheduled to be held on February 8 and 14, due to the matter being sub judice.
Amid the opposition’s protest, a bill was passed into law in the Sindh
Assembly on January 19 which required elections for the local governments’ reserved seats to be held openly instead of through secret balloting.
According to article 226 of the Constitution of Pakistan, except for the elections of the prime minister and the chief ministers, elections for any other seats could not be held through a show-of-hands.
Citing the article, opposition parties the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) and the Pakistan Muslim League - Functional (PML-F) protesting the bill filed a petition in the Sindh High Court calling for the amendment in the Sindh Local Government Bill, 2013 null and void. A fresh date for the elections was yet to be announced.
