This refers to the letter, ‘The dam statement’ (December 30) by Shahr-i-Yar Khan. The damage due to the 2010 floods would have happened whether the Kalabagh Dam was built or not. The dam at the drawdown level would have no adverse effects on the flood situation at Nowshera.
Under normal conditions, much more land will be submerged in Punjab than in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa if the dam is built, and many more people will be displaced in Punjab than in KP. The dam level will be well below the outlet from Mardan and SCARP. Any adverse effect on the generation of power at the Ghazi Barotha project will be accompanied by an immense advantage of 6.1 million acre-feet of water. Every mega project has its advantages and disadvantages but we have to look at the larger picture in a country starved of water for irrigation.
