Last Friday (June 11), the director of an engineering university, Dr Zahir Ali Syed, was shot dead during an attempted robbery. It is painful to admit that such heinous crimes have returned to Karachi. The economic hub of the country is becoming unsafe for its residents. In just a month, at least nine people lost their lives when they resisted an armed mugging attempt. It is unfortunate that the law enforcement agencies haven’t taken concrete actions to date. On the one hand, robbers who snatch people’s valuable belongings and don’t think twice before shooting them get off scot-free. On the other hand, people remain unsafe.
There is a dire need to take timely steps to deal with rising street crimes.

Multiple robbery and mugging incidents have been reported in Karachi in a period of a few months. The death of an academic, who was shot dead by unidentified assailants near Stadium Road, makes it clear that life is not invaluable in our city.
This new wave of insensitive killings is concerning. The authorities concerned must take strict action against these criminals so that people’s lives remain saved.
