The ‘Americanised’

It seems politico-religious parties in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have mastered the art of snowballing even the most trivial issue into a mountain. The latest issue under fire by the leaders of the Jamaat-e-Islami and the JUI-F is the choice of uniforms for boys studying at government-run educational institutions. The provincial government is mulling over a proposal to introduce trousers and shirts as the uniform for the neglected students of government schools.
However, these parties have strongly objected to the change claiming that it will introduce ‘Americanisation‘. Going by their diktat, students of private schools and security personnel wearing trousers and shirts have all become ‘American’. That leaves only a minority, those wearing shalwar kameez, as ‘Pakistanis’. Interestingly, mostly the grandchildren of these concerned leaders are studying in elite English-medium schools and feel proud of their uniforms with neck ties, trousers and shirts.
