GUJRANWALA: Hundreds of farmers on Sunday staged a demonstration and blocked the National Highway for several hours against the low rate of rice crop.
The protesters, later joined by several JI workers, led by Kisan Board president Farooq Ahmed chanted slogans against the government for not providing relief to growers. They told that paddy growers were forced to sell their produce at very low price in the absence of a policy to support them. The protesters said that they had to spend a huge amount on rice cultivation but selling paddy at low price did not even cover their farm input cost. They warned that if the government does not announce and implement higher support price, they would launch a countrywide protest.
