This refers to the article, ‘Pakistan’s attention span problem’ (August 25) by Ayaz Amir. The writer has concluded the article with a proposal which, in fact, he has been projecting since after the last general elections in 2013. “Kayani was undone by his extension... a right it has earned through the toil and sacrifices of the last one year.” I am sure the writer will hardly find any sizeable number of supporters for his proposal because the system of governance he preaches has failed a number of times in the past and has also been a cause of a number of problems the country is facing today.
His proposal to leap over to the presidential form of governance once more and to have another experience – that he calls a fresh start – is taking things too lightly. A strong presidency can only be achieved by making the Senate stronger than the National Assembly. The process of effecting improvements through democracy and rule of law has started. The democratic system will refine with time. This country can exist with democracy, supremacy of the constitution and rule of law. No new experiments are required. I think a single piece of legislation can make this country worth living and a pride for its citizens, ie, corruption of any sort should be brought at par with terrorism. Why should corruption thrive and corrupt people be above the law?
