This refers to the article, ‘Pakistan: the permanent factors’ (July 7) by Ayaz Amir. The writer has pointed to innumerable, persistent and deleterious afflictions our country is suffering from. Those of us who are old and have lived in this Islamic Republic for over fifty years can vouch for the accuracy of the writer’s statements. Many of us have faced bribe-demanding government functionaries. Despite so many different governments and politicians, corruption appears to have increased many folds since the country’s inception. None of us can name even one person at the helm who did any serious effort to curb this menace. They came and saw the entire society deteriorating to such a low but looked the other way.
Is it too much to ask for a change in the mindset of just one person among us who should perform the miracle of transforming the minds of the entire nation? If this job is too big for anyone living among us to undertake, I will humbly beg for one more Mohammad Ali Jinnah to lead this nation by example.
