This refers to the letter ‘The question of judgment’ (June 14) by Kamila Hyat. The writer has rightly pointed out the flaws plaguing our legal as well as social systems. While one was yet to digest the fact that the prison sentence of Khadija’s attacker, Shah Hussain, was reduced, the news of his acquittal left people dumfounded. It is astonishing how a convicted criminal was so easily let off the hook, all because he is the son of lawyer.
It is safe to say that the frequency with which such cases are reported in this country has led to a lack of trust on the judicial system. If those ruling the country wish for a common man to follow the law, they will first have to rid themselves of all biases and show, by way of action, that the institutions they are in-charge of are capable of delivering any benefits. Otherwise, it won’t take long for people to interpret laws and act upon them as they please. Or haven’t we started doing that already?
