KEMU workshop begins

LAHORE: Inauguration of three-day workshop ‘Newborn Resuscitation programme’ was held at Paediatrics Department Mayo Hospital in collaboration between Paediatric Dept KEMU/ MHL, AAPNA Paeds and KEMCAANA.

Its motive is to train doctors and nurses in neonatal resuscitation according to latest guidelines recommended by American Academy of Paediatrics. The workshop includes online tests, e-simulations, hands-on experience and certification by KEMU. In future, more doctors and staff nurses will be trained keeping in mind Pakistan has highest neonatal mortality rate - birth Asphyxia amongst top three causes.

Prof Dr Haroon Hamid welcomed all the guests and participants. The inauguration ceremony was addressed by Prof Dr Amir Zaman Khan (VC KEMU) who highlighted the importance and thanked foreign doctors for their collaboration.

Prof Dr Akmal Laeeq, former HOD paediatrics KEMU, shed light on brief history of NRP-KEMU. Dr Riaz (President AAPNA Paeds) discussed salient features of NRP and the efforts behind it. Dr Ayesha Najeeb, chairperson NRP implementation committee, emphasised the importance of training of healthcare staff for resuscitating neonates and all the efforts put behind this programme to make this possible.

Prof Dr Masood Sadiq, Dean CH&ICH, appreciated the joint efforts. Prof Sajid Maqbool, former dean Ch&ICH, highlighted that NRP is need of the hour. And hopefully, it will help in reduction of neonatal mortality in Pakistan in long term, he said. Prof Irshad Qureshi, registrar KEMU, thanked foreign facilitators Dr M Riaz and Dr Ayesha Najeeb who have come all the way from the USA for this training workshop.
