LAHORE
YOUNG Doctors Association (YDA), Punjab, held a protest demonstration and blocked Jail Road to condemn killings of doctors and non-payment of salaries to postgraduate trainee doctors in public sector hospitals in the province.
Young doctors, primarily from Services Hospital and Punjab Institute of Cardiology, blocked Jail Road, which put traffic out of gear for several hours in addition to creating problems for ambulances and other vehicles carrying patients to reach emergencies of the two mega hospitals in the heart of City. The young doctors, carrying banners and placards and chanting slogans to press for their demands, rallied from Services Hospital to main thoroughfare and staged a sit-in on the road, which not only caused great inconvenience to the motorists but also created problems for the patients in the two hospitals. The situation was extremely worrying for parents of the children as they had come to pick their children at closing time of most schools around the vicinity but remained stuck in the traffic for a long time.
The doctors demanded the government to arrest target killers of doctors and protect the doctor community so that they could be able to serve the ailing humanity with a sense of security. They demanded Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif to intervene and provide salaries to PG trainees and take action against bureaucracy for creating hurdles in the way. Later, the young doctors ended their sit-in after two hours of protest and announced holding protest demonstration in Shaikh Zayed Hospital, Lahore today.
