A step forward
The initiative by the City District Government Lahore (CDGL) and Women Chamber of Commerce and Industry (WCCI) to set up women-owned stalls at Shadman Sunday Bazaar is welcoming. The move calls for applause as it will help women’s economic development and provide them a platform to show their talent and skills. Fifty one per cent of the total population of Pakistan comprises of women, therefore it is essential to harness their potential in constructive ways for the socio-economic development of the country.
In the above context, the Punjab government has taken a number of steps for the progress and prosperity of women. The establishment of Daycare Centers for working women, allocation of 40 per cent share for females in the Skill Development Programme, setting up Career Counseling Centers for female students and the approval of Women’s Rights Bill are ample proof that the government is committed to women’s empowerment. It is hoped that the government will remain sincere in its efforts to empower women and grant them their just status in society.
