PESHAWAR: Chief Minister Pervez Khattak has directed the relevant officials to take steps to ensure admissions in the Nowshera Medical College in the light of the decision of the Peshawar High Court (PHC).

The chief minister asked the students to contact the admission committee of the Khyber Medical College so that they could be registered for admission.

He directed the quarters concerned to commence classes as soon as possible. He issued the directives in the light of the decision of PHC for ensuring admissions and other facilities to students, meeting the criteria set by the Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC).

It may be noted that the recognition of the Nowshera Medical College has been in doldrums since 2014. “The PMDC has been using delaying tactics in recognising the college despite the availability of its building, hostels, required faculty and other requirements,” said a handout.

It said that the college administration had deposited Rs21 lakh to the PMDC as its fee, but it was not allowing the college administration to enroll students. The communiqué said the students of the college moved the PHC in January this year against the delaying tactics of the PMDC.

On Tuesday, the PHC expressed anguish at the delaying tactics by the PMDC in recognising the college and asked the council not to play with future of the students. The court has summoned president and secretary PMDC on November 30 for next hearing and issued directives for initiation of admissions.

The court also directed the college administration to fulfill the deficiencies required for recognition of the college. The provincial government has asked the students to contact the joint admission committee so that classes could be started in accordance with the decision of the court.

It merits a mention here that Nowshera Medical College would have 150 seats wherein 100 will be for MBBS while the rest 50 will be for dentistry. The chief minister has issued directives for fulfilling requirements needed for the recognition of the college.
