MKRMS arranges seminar on hormone imbalances and their effects on human health

Islamabad

Hormone imbalances that has emerged as a true epidemic can be termed as a vicious cycle that can rob you of your energy, vitality, life and lifestyle and unless properly diagnosed and evaluated, proper recovery from the health hazard the hormone imbalance causes is very difficult to achieve.

It is what that can be deciphered as after discussion in a public awareness seminar arranged by Mir Khalil-ur-Rehman Memorial Society (MKRMS) in collaboration with Pakistan Endocrine Society (PES), South Asian Federation of Endocrine Societies (SAFES) and CCL Pharma here in a local hotel on Sunday.

The title of the seminar was ‘Hormones ki kami beshi ke insani sehat per asrat’ (the effects of hormone imbalance on human health).

Senior Editor Health Care Education from MKRMS Wasif Nagi initiated the proceedings of the seminar and introduced the guest speakers to the audience that include healthcare professionals and patients suffering from hormone imbalances.

The guest speakers at the public awareness seminar include President SAFES Dr. Syed Abbas Raza, Vice President SAFES Professor A H Amir, General Secretary American Association of Clinical Endocrinologist from Multan Dr. Faisal Masood Qureshi, President PES Professor Saeed A Mehr, Vice President PES Dr. Ali Java, Consultant Endocrinologist at MH Rawalpindi Col Dr. Shahid Ahmed and Consultant Endocrinologist at Shifa International Hospital Dr. Usama Ishtiaq along with representatives from CCL Pharma.

Dr. Qaddafi Jehangir from CCL while introducing the topic said the hormone balance has a much sensitive and complicated role and is responsible for almost all functions in the human body. He said there are a total of nine glands forming hormonal system.

It is worth mentioning here that human body contains as many as nine ductless glands and five ducted glands, depending on gender and physiology. These 14 major glands are essential for conducting a wide range of key biological processes in the human body.

The glands found in the human body are responsible for everything ranging from allowing mothers to breastfeed newborns to ensuring that body temperature can be more effectively regulated. Studies reveal that the body’s endocrine system is responsible for hormone regulation, managing blood glucose levels and protecting organs and tissues from external pathogens by ensuring an effective immune response to viruses and bacterium.

In the seminar arranged by MKRMS, Dr. Abbas Raza explained that hormone imbalance plays detrimental role in devastating human health particularly among patients suffering from diabetes. It is observed that most of the diabetics die of heart problems because of an imbalance of hormones that disturbs blood pressure and cholesterol levels, he said.

While addressing the participants, Dr. A H Amir said hormonal imbalance may cause infertility as in most cases of infertility, thyroid, pituitary and testes glands are found to be responsible for hormone imbalance.

Dr. Faisal discussed the role of hormone imbalance in cases of obesity saying if hormone imbalance is diagnosed in time and is recovered, obesity can be controlled and a number of complications can be avoided.

Dr. Saeed A Mehr informed the audience of a number of health problems caused in result of hypothyroidism (a condition in which body lacks thyroid hormones) and hyperthyroidism (when the thyroid makes too much hormones).

Dr. Java explained importance of adrenal glands that produce steroid hormones. He discussed in brief the problems that are emerged in case of imbalance of steroid hormones saying when a patient is given steroids unnecessarily, his body stops producing steroid hormone that affects human health badly in the long run.

Col Shahid while addressing the participants said if thyroid glands are not working properly, a patient can have goiter and even cancer and hence the appearance of goiter should not be taken as lightly.

Dr. Usama from SIH discussed the problem of osteoporosis that is caused by hormonal imbalance. He said osteoporosis appears in females mostly after 45 to 50 years of age due to menopause while in males, it appears generally after 60 years of age and in result of the problem, the elder people are more prone to have fractures. The best remedy to avoid fractures, elderly people should be screened for hormonal disorders, he said.

After lectures from the guest speakers, a question and answer session was held at the seminar that was coordinated by Wasif Nagi.

It is worth mentioning here that the simplest of signs that indicate hormone imbalance include fatigue not relieved by rest, tired all the time feeling no energy, difficulty getting up in the morning, poor sleep, craving for salty or sugary foods, decreased sex drive, decreased ability to handle stress, increased time to recover from illness or injury, light headed when standing up quickly, depression, lack of enjoyment or happiness, weight gain or loss, sinus problems, excessive allergies, anxiety and digestive disorders.

Studies also reveal that various clinical conditions are the direct result of hormone imbalance that, in most cases, can be completely preventable. Such conditions include chronic viral infections (EBV, Herpes, etc.), allergies, chronic fatigue syndrome, migraines, autoimmune disease, cancer, cardiovascular disease, insomnia, hypoglycemia, Type II diabetes, osteoporosis and irritable bowel disease.
