Going cashless

Going cashless

The government’s ambition to transition Pakistan into a cashless economy is commendable. However, without addressing foundational challenges, this vision risks remaining a lofty aspiration rather than an achievable goal. In a country where internet disruptions are routine and over half the population remains digitally excluded, the idea of a rapid shift to a cashless economy seems disconnected from ground realities. Pakistan can evolve into a cashless economy – but only through a gradual, inclusive and well-orchestrated strategy. This strategy must prioritise expanding digital infrastructure, fostering financial and digital literacy and, most critically, cultivating public confidence in digital systems. Enthusiasm alone will not drive the digital transformation.
