Independent learning
Education seems to have lost its transformational power because of its over-structured nature. The true purpose of education should be the transformation of an individual and society at large. This transformation happens when an individual becomes familiar with one’s own self and how he/she belongs to the society he/she lives in. This goal could be achieved through independent learning. Independent learning is a method or learning process where learners have ownership and control of their learning.
Unfortunately, the current education system gives students little or no ownership of what to learn and how. Thus, we see graduate students struggling with critical and creative thinking. It is time that we foster independent learning among students so that they develop crucial skills for successful educational and professional careers.
