Rebate robbery

Rebate robbery

The federal government’s decision to eliminate a 25 per cent tax rebate for researchers and educators is heartless and will subject them to significant financial difficulties. University and college professors are likely to be the most affected, as this rebate is their primary means of coping with rising inflation and everyday expenses. Additionally, the burden is compounded by a considerable tax on salaries imposed on researchers and educators this financial year. When compared to the benefits and privileges enjoyed by bureaucrats and administrators, educators are treated unfairly.

Yet, for tax purposes, academics are often equated with bureaucrats, which highlights a significant inconsistency and gross injustice. While some reports claim that the government has asked the IMF if it can restore the rebate, this is not enough. It is imperative for the prime minister and parliament to recognize this issue and abolish such an unjust and reckless proposal.
