This refers to the article, ‘The budget design’ (June 2) by Dr Akmal Hussain. The writer has pointed out that the public expenditure on health and education is merely 0.92 percent and 1.2 percent of GDP, respectively. These two sectors are still last on the priority list of successive governments.
The reason for these bare minimum figures is that children of the elite class do not get education in the country’s public schools. Also our elite class get medical treatment abroad. It is imperative to spend at least four percent of GDP on health and education to come at par with developed countries.
