In a ground-breaking initiative by the Sindh government, eighteen women have made history as the first-ever female bus drivers to be integrated into the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system in Karachi. These pioneers are undergoing comprehensive training. In another commendable yet less publicized move by the provincial government, electric cars are set to serve as taxis on the streets of Karachi. Initially, approximately 200 electric taxis will be introduced, with 50 of them designated as women-only taxis driven by female drivers. This momentous decision to involve women in the transport sector holds significant promise for women’s emancipation, empowerment, and stands as a positive contributor to economic growth.
Beyond its economic impact, this initiative plays a pivotal role in dismantling barriers associated with misogynistic and sexist behaviour in society, issues that have long been contentious in the pursuit of gender equality. It is imperative for other provinces to take note of this development and consider implementing similar strategies, including the introduction of trained women drivers and conductors for public transport in their respective capitals. Such steps are vital for fostering a more inclusive and equitable society.
