5.9 magnitude earthquake hits parts of Pakistan

ISLAMABAD: A 5.9 magnitude earthquake jolted Punjab, Islamabad and parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, adjoining tribal belt and Azad Kashmir, Geo News reported Thursday.


According to reports, the tremors were felt in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Peshawar, Swat, Azad Kashmir, Chitral, Kurram Agency Lower Dir, Battagram, Mianwali, Shangla, Mardan, Murree, Malakand Division, Nowshera and other areas.


Some people were reportedly injured in KPK. People came out of their houses reciting verses from the Holy Quran.


AFP adds: A moderate 5.9-magnitude earthquake shook Afghanistan and Pakistan on , with tremors felt in Kabul and Islamabad, but officials said there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties.


The epicentre was on the Afghan-Tajikistan border at a depth of 225 kilometres (140 miles), senior Pakistani meteorological official Hazrat Mir told AFP.


The quake was felt across northwestern Pakistan, Islamabad and in parts of Pakistan's central Punjab province, he said.


The US Geological Survey measured the quake at a magnitude of 5.4 in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan.


Pakistan was hit by a 7.6-magnitude earthquake on October 8, 2005, that killed more than 73,000 people and left about 3.5 million homeless, mainly in Pakistan-controlled Kashmir and parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
