The Charsadda lesson
Charsadda has two main educational institutions – the Bacha Khan University and the Government Post-Graduate College. Whereas much attention is being paid to the university, the college stands neglected possibly because it does not appear as attractive as the university – though it houses as many students as the BKU.
The college offers opportunities to girl students of the area who do not want to go to the BKU which is further away from their houses. Currently hundreds of girl students are enrolled in at the bachelors level in the college. The BKU was protected by 54 guards while the college just has four guards. They are hired from the college’s own fund which is meant for in-campus facilities. When members of the college council met the DC and asked him to permanently deploy a few police officials, he refused, saying it was impossible. Is this the lesson we have learnt from the Bacha Khan University tragedy?
