KARACHI: The historical Eduljee Dinshaw Road, adjacent to the Karachi Port Trust building, was inaugurated by Sindh Governor Dr Isharatul Ebad Khan in an elaborate ceremony attended by diplomats, senior government functionaries and politicians, on Sunday.
Appreciating the generous contributions of donors which led to the completion of the first phase of the project, he assured of putting in all efforts for the timely completion of the project’s second phase.
Customs Preventive Collector Tariq Huda said the road housed the two most prestigious architectural landmarks of the metropolis, the Karachi Port Trust building and the Imperial Customs House but used to be among the most neglected areas of the city.
We had already spent enough time waiting for the concerned authorities to take charge of the situation, hence, the Customs House partnered with leading architect Shahid Abdulla and interior designer Danish Zuby to restore the road’s former glory, Huda added.
Speaking to The News, Abdulla said all municipal stakeholders and agencies were taken on board to streamline the traffic, make space for spacious pavements, adding benches and turning the street into a social hub for local residents.
The city commissioner sought the support of the city’s residents to complete the next phase of the project. He said the second phase of the project would focus on beautifying the spaces situated behind the Jhulay Lal Mandir up to the Aga Khan Jamaat Khana.
Project director Haider Raza said the restoration of the road was implemented after taking into account the international standards of architectural conservation.
Commenting on what made him connect with the project, Raza said, “Heritage has a language which we all need to learn.”
