52,596 driving licences issued since Nov 2
Karachi: As many as 40,552 learner and 12,044 permanent driving licences have been issued from all three branches of the Karachi License Department (KLD), including Korangi, Nazimabad and Clifton branches, from November 2 to till date in the metropolis, said DIG KLD Aftab Pathan.
Speaking to the PPI on Saturday, he said that the rush at the three branches had decreased compared to the last months, but there still was dire need for establishing new branches in the remaining districts of the metropolis. “Reforms were materialised in issuing licences to the new drivers in which 100 percent transparency was ensured,” he claimed.
The DIG KLD, Aftab Pathan, said that a large number of learner licences had been issued to the new drivers while only 2,460 permanent licences were issued to the experienced , 404 to commercial and 8,838 licences were renewed, 282 were duplicated and other 60 were issued in different categories.
Fancy number plates
After receiving a large number of complaints from drivers about the non-issuance of registration number plates for their vehicles by the Excise and Taxation Department, the Traffic Police Department has shelved its drive initiated a few weeks back against the fancy number plates in the metropolis, said DIG Traffic Karachi Dr Amir Ahmed Shaikh on Saturday.
Talking to the PPI, he said that as many as 3,641,800 vehicles are registered only in Karachi under the Excide and Taxation Department while a large number of vehicles have not been issued with their registration number plates, which is creating hindrance in the way of revamping the traffic system in the metropolis.
The DIG said they had inaugurated an advance system of Traffic Violation Evidence System that could ensure monitoring and fining violators of traffic rules.
It could punish traffic law violators with video evidence installed along different spots of the city, he said, adding that if any driver was found violating the traffic rules he would get a challan at his house through courier service.
