LAHORE: The Judicial Commission of Pakistan on Thursday recommended two former judges - Tariq Pervez and Khilji Arif Hussain - as ad hoc judges of the Supreme Court of Pakistan for one year.
A meeting of the commission held at the SC Lahore Registry also recommended appointment of Mohsin Kayani and Aurangzeb Khan as additional judges of the Islamabad High Court. The commission approved confirmation of Justice Amir Farooq, an additional IHC judge.
Chief Justice of Pakistan Anwar Zaheer Jamali headed the meeting which was attended by Justice Mian Saqib Nisar, Justice Asif Saeed Khan Khosa, Justice Ameer Hani Muslim, Justice Ijaz Afzal Khan, IHC Chief Justice Anwar Khan Kasi, senior IHC Justice Noorul Haq Qureshi, Law Minister Pervez Rashid, Attorney General Salman Butt and Pakistan Bar Council’s member Yasin Azad. During the meeting, Azad opposed the appointment of ad hoc judges. He said the SC, in the Al-Jihad Trust case, had discouraged ad hoc appointments in judiciary.
However, other members said Article 182 of the Constitution authorised the SC to appoint ad hoc judges in case of dire need. The commission would forward its recommendations to the Parliamentary Committee for final approval.
