KARACHI: India defeated arch-rivals Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2015 final 6-2 in Kuantan, Malaysia, on Sunday.
The Green-shirts failed to maintain their rhythm as both their forwards and defenders failed against the Indians.
According to the reports received here, a vast difference was seen between the two teams.
Pakistan did not have the game under their control at any time and lost the match with a big margin. Harmanpreet Singh was the top scorer with four goals. He proved himself a deft flicker on penalty corners. Armaan Qureshi and Manpreet chipped in with a goal each for India.
For Pakistan, there were only two goals. Azfar Yaqoob scored one on a penalty corner in the first half. Muhammad Dilbar scored a field goal in the second.
Pakistan’s chief coach Tahir Zaman admitted the team came under pressure as soon as the game began.
India scored three goals in the first half. Pakistan managed only one through Azfar.
Tahir said that the difference between the two teams was quite obvious as the Indians had been playing international hockey for two and a half years. “We established our team just two months ago. The boys played just five international matches and had a one-month training camp,” he said.
“But the team played well and we got our main target of qualifying for the Junior World Cup,” he said.
He termed reaching the final of the event a big achievement and said if proper training and chances of participating in international hockey matches were given to the boys, the same team would play much better in the World Cup.
He said that Indian penalty corner specialist Hermantpreet Singh was a dangerous flicker and was the top scorer with 14 goals.
“Our ratio of goal scoring on penalty corners was 50 percent which was a good sign. But we need extensive work on goalkeeping department. Talal Khalid proved himself a good goalkeeper but he needs to improve further. We must find a few new goalkeepers as well,” he said.
He said that Muhammad Dilbar played well in the event and scored nine goals. Pakistan team will return home on Monday (today).
