BAHAWALPUR: A 40-year-old accused was allegedly tortured to death by Chishtian City police on Thursday.
According to Chishtian DSP Shams Khan, police raided the house of Muhammad Akmal at Chak 105, Fateh, on Wednesday night and arrested him with huge quantity of liquor.
The accused jumped from the police van when he was being taken to the police station, the DSP said, adding, as a result, he died on the spot.
Later, the deceased’s relatives and residents of Chak 105 staged a demonstration outside the Chishtian Tehsil Headquarters Hospital, alleging that Akmal died due to police torture.
The protesters dispersed when PML-N MPA Ahsanul Haq Bajwa assured them of registering an FIR against the accused policemen. A case has been registered against eight accused, including ASI Rana Asim and three other policemen.
