Our approach in tackling the effects of natural disasters is far behind what should be expected in the 21st century. According to statements made by those who survived a factory collapse in Lahore, the owner of the building had ignored suggestions to construct a fourth floor to help the pillars bear the excessive weight. This resulted in the collapse of the building. Furthermore, this means that the building map was not approved by concerned authority. This should act as a warning for building owners to have their maps approved by the relevant authorities. The government should penalise those who fail to do so.
The rescue operation must be planned more intricately, with trained and efficient rescue teams. While the army and rescue teams did their best to save workers from the debris, there is a dire need to follow SOPs when such tragedies take place. I request the government of Punjab to conduct an investigation and hold the relevant parties responsible for this tragedy. Other provinces should do the same in order to ensure the absolute safety of workers.
