Rawalpindi Cantonment Board (RCB) has initiated steps to improve the overall condition of sanitation system in all the wards falling in its jurisdiction.
According to official spokesman Qaiser Mahmood, RCB Executive Officer Dr. Saima Shah since taking charge of her office took the task of making improvement in the sanitation condition as a challenge. Prior to her assuming the office, the condition of sanitation in different areas was worst due to certain reasons.
Qaisar Mahmood said that Dr. Saima Shah with her efforts has got approved plan of improvement of sanitation system.
As part of plan and strategy evolved, 4 dumper vehicles are being purchased besides 10 mini tippers at a total cost of Rs34 million. The work on fleet wastage conditions has also been initiated. Similarly, tenders have been invited for acquiring land for dumping site. The radius of the new dumping site would not be far away but would be at a distance of 20 to 25 kilometers far from the city. Presently due to non presence of dumping land the civic body is facing difficulty in bettering the overall sanitation condition.
The official spokesman said that besides laying priority on sanitation improvement, the CEO is fully determined to resolve the longstanding problem of graveyard. For this purpose tenders have been floated for acquiring land for graveyard. The land for graveyard would be acquired near to the cantonment areas at a minimum radius of 10 to 12 kilometers. This issue would also be resolved in very short future, he said.
Moreover, much attention is being paid on recovery of dues from the people who do not pay property tax, water tariff etc. On the orders of the executive officer, the revenue department has achieved target of recovery up to 50 per cent from just 7 per cent two months ago.
Efforts are being paid to beautify Rawalpindi Cantonment through austerity measures. This task would be accomplished on simple grounds, Qaiser Mahmood said.
The RCB is also working on a comprehensive plan for shifting of cattle pens from cantonment areas to far flung and rural areas. The presence of cattle pens is creating hygienic problems and spoiling the entire atmosphere. Before shifting of cattle pens, the civic body has to work on selecting suitable sites, the spokesman said.
