PESHAWAR: The district administration on Tuesday arrested two persons for slaughtering calves and supplying the meat to the market. A notification issued from the deputy commissioner office said that officials raided a meat shop on Pajjagi Road and found the meat of underage animals at the shop. The official arrested two persons and recovered 1000 kilograms meat from their possession. It is worth mentioning here that the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Food Safety and Halal Food Authority has banned the slaughter of underage animals which is creating the shortage of cattle in the province. However, despite the ban the butchers in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and other parts of the country slaughter calves. The butchers buy calves from the traders at very low price. A dairy farm owner in Peshawar, Tehsinullah, told this scribe that the traders, who brought the buffaloes and cows from Punjab, sold the calves in order to obtain more milk from the animals. He said the calf minimise the quantity of milk causing loss to dairy farmers.
