Commissioner Karachi Shoaib Ahmed Siddiqui has issued directives to metropolitan officials to immediately arrange parking for oil tankers at the Zulfikarabad Oil Terminal.
He issued these directives while presiding over a meeting held on Thursday to review the measures being taken to comply with orders of the Supreme Court of filing a progress report about unauthorised parking of oil tankers in Clifton and Shireen Jinnah Colony causing severe inconvenience to citizens.
Members of the meeting also discussed at length the report being prepared by the Karachi administration pertaining to the master plan of the new oil tankers terminal.
The commissioner apprised metropolitan officials that he had informed the court in the last hearing held regarding the shifting of oil tankers about the inadequacies at the new terminal which were creating difficulties for the owners and drivers.
The Supreme Court has directed the police and transport authorities to ensure shifting of oil tankers’ terminal from Shireen Jinnah Colony to Zulfiqarabad, also seeking a progress report within seven days.
On August 19, the court heard a petition filed by a Shagufta Bibi, resident of Clifton Block-1, who had pleaded to the Chief Justice of Pakistan for an order to shift an oil tankers’ terminal from the locality. The letter sent by the lady was later converted into a constitutional petition.
In his reply before the apex court, the secretary transport had said that more than 50 percent of the shifting process had been completed and the oil tanker operators had been directed to shift the remaining tankers at the earliest.
