PESHAWAR: The newly elected members of different tiers of the local government are taking oath of office in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa today.
The oath-taking ceremony in the provincial capital would be held at the District Council Hall at 9 am. Deputy Commissioner Peshawar Riaz Khan Mehsud, who is also district returning officer for the local government elections, would administer oath to the councillors.
The members of the four towns of Peshawar district would gather at the Government Higher Secondary School No. 1 in the city to be administered oath by the additional district commissioner.
A meeting was held at the deputy commissioner’s office on Friday to finalise arrangements of the oath-taking ceremonies.
The meeting decided that the respective returning officers would administer oath to the members of the 348 village and neighbourhood councils of the district.
An official of the District Council Peshawar told The News that arrangements had been made to administer oath to the elected councillors. He said the elections for the offices of the district and tehsil chairmen would be held tomorrow.
Meanwhile, the district administration imposed Section 144 for a month for ensuring proper security during the oath-taking and the election process for the chairmen of district and tehsil councils.
A notification said that tinted glasses of vehicles, display of arms and aerial firing would be banned.
The district and tehsil members and the candidates for the nazim and naib nazim would not be allowed to take out processions for attending the oath-taking ceremonies.
Those violating the orders would be charged under Section 188, the notification added.
The local government elections in the province were held on May 30 after 10 long years. The oath-taking is taking place after three months and only after the election of district and tehsil chairmen the local governments would become ready and operational.
Some 43,000 members of the district, tehsil and village councils have been elected in the 24 districts of the province.
The oath-taking ceremonies would also be held in all the districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa except Kohistan would take place today. The local government polls could not be held in Kohistan due a court case that had challenged its division into two districts.
