The anti-terrorism court conducting the trial of senior Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) leader Amir Khan, accused of sheltering criminals and terrorists, issued orders on Friday to provide him with a copy of the charge sheet on.
The court also observed that charges against the accused will be framed in the next hearing.
Khan was arrested by the Rangers personnel when they raided MQM headquarters Nine Zero on March 11 for allegedly facilitating target killers and other heinous criminals. After his 90-day detention by the Rangers expired, he was granted bail by the anti-terrorism court and was also allowed to leave for Saudi Arabia for Hajj on August 17. However, prior his departure, the accused has to submit two surety bonds worth Rs1 million each.
In case of Khan’s failure to return to Pakistan within a month, the amount will be confiscated.
The Rangers’ counsel had opposed Khan’s plea for performing Hajj. He argued that the accused could not be allowed to travel abroad since he was booked in serious offences. He had said the permission of Federal Investigation Agency and interior ministry were required for allowing him to travel abroad for Hajj.
Talking to reporters outside the courtroom, the MQM leader strongly condemned the alleged apprehension of innocent party workers and claimed that they were being victimised or killed and no one was raising any questions over it. He said on one hand, the leaders and workers of the MQM were brought to court with the eyes covered and hands in cuffs, on the other, the leaders of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) were provided “VIP protocol” when they were presented in court.
Amir Khan back in RC
Amir Khan, senior member of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement, has been inducted into the Coordination Committee of the party.
The announcement was made by MQM chief Altaf Hussain on Friday while addressing a joint meeting of the members of Rabita Committee and different departments of the party.
According to a statement issued by the party, the committee had been dissolved earlier and Khan was among those removed from the Coordination Committee in Karachi. After consultation with the committee, the decision to include Khan in the KCC was taken, Hussain said. Expressing dissatisfaction with the committee, the MQM chief had dissolved the entire committee and announced that a new body with saner elements would be organised.
He said news was being circulated that a charge sheet had been prepared against Khan, but "I must say that you use force and we are determined to fight. We will not leave Amir in the lurch.”
