SUKKUR: Environmental experts and government officials have shown their concerns over the impact of climate change, including desertification, droughts, rising temperatures, unusual pattern of rainfall and other factors, especially in the desert regions during a conference organised by Thardeep Rural Development Programme (TRDP) in Mithi.

While addressing a conference on “Coping with Climate Change,” the environmentalists shared their concerns over the devastation caused by the environmental degradation and their recent actions to combat natural catastrophes. Communication Advocacy Manager UNDP Pakistan, Ameen Amjad, emphasised the participants to understand the impacts of climate change not only on the human lives but also on the soil which was the only source of feeding for millions.

Ameen Amjad warned that the worsening situation has already posed a threat to agriculture activities and damaging the fertility of the land. He informed that his organisation under sustainable land management programme had launched a drive in over two hundred villages of 14 districts of the country to boost the agriculture land to fight with desertification, food insecurity and other impacts of the climate change. Rab Nawaz, who led the delegation of International Fund for Agriculture Development (IFAD), said there was a need to create awareness among the small land owners, who were playing vital role to overcome the looming danger of food scarcity in the country. He urged the authorities to train and properly guide to the small farmers as well as land owners to attain maximum utilization of the land.
