Over 6,000 prisoners to celebrate Eid in jails

Over 6,000 prisoners will celebrate Eidul Fitr in the two jails of provincial metropolis amid tight security to avoid untoward incident while special arrangements have been finalised for their food and prayers.
Jail administration has also released 38 prisoners involved in petty cases on the special orders of Additional and Sessions Judge so that they could celebrate Eid with their families. As the different courts granted bails to 111 prisoners in different cases, they were also released from Camp Jail.
Superintendent of Camp Jail Shahram Khan told The News that prisoners were allowed to see their family members, relatives and friends for three days (Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday). There was no time limit. They were able to greet each other and share their domestic affairs.
He said that on first and second day of Eid, food and other items would be received from the families of prisoners but they would not be allowed to meet each other.
He went on to say that special Eid prayers would be offered and he would also offer prayers along with the prisoners. About the food on Eid days, Shahram Khan said that the scale of the food would be increased from 100g to 200g while vermicelli would be served to them.
To a question, Shahram said that parliamentarian Tariq Gill had also provided Iftar dinner to prisoners on Wednesday. It is worth mentioning here that Camp Jail is housing 2,672 prisoners while Kot Lakhpat Jail 3,300 convicts. About the security arrangements, the superintendent said that additional force had been deployed while a senior officer would stay present in the jail round-the-clock. IG Jails Mian Farooq Nazir said that every possible step had been taken for prisoners across the province. He added that best food would be served to inmates during Eid days. He said he personally supervised the meetings of prisoners and their families ahead of Eid.
