KARACHI: Pakistan lost the doubles match in the semi-final stage of Davis Cup Asia/Oceania Group-II tie against Indonesia on the second day at Plexipave (Outdoor) surface of Gelora Bung Karno Tennis Stadium, Jakarta, Indonesia.
The Indonesian duo of Christopher Rungkat and Sunu-Wahyu Trijati defeated the Pakistani pair of Abid Ali Akbar and Aqeel Khan 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
The Pakistani pair won two sets but failed to continue the momentum. Pakistan lead the tie 2-1.
Pakistan need to win just one of the two reverse singles on Thursday (today) to win the tie. Aqeel plays against Indonesia No 1 D Susanto, who was beaten by Samir Iftikhar on the first day.
Samir will face A Sasongko, who lost to Aqeel Khan on Tuesday.
Non-playing captain Hameed-ul-Haq’s confidence in Abid proved unfounded.
Hameed had said Abid was a very good doubles player and if given chances would prove himself better than Aisam-ul-Haq.
This scribe tried to contact Hameed, but he was not available. Hameed had also hinted at giving Abid a chance to play one singles match on the last day.
