VIENNA: Austria’s former world skiing champion Kathrin Zettel on Monday became the third Austrian this summer to announce her retirement from alpine racing.
The 28-year-old has earned no less than nine World Cup titles in the course of her career.
Her sporting highlight was winning a gold medal in the super-combined event at the 2009 world championships in Val d’Isere.
But in recent years, Zettel had been suffering from painful hip injuries over the past few years.
She nevertheless placed third in the slalom race at last year’s Winter Olympics in Sochi.
Zettel’s announcement comes just weeks after Olympic champions Andrea Fischbacher and Nicole Hosp confirmed they were hanging up their skis.
