The trend of conducting multiple choice question (MCQ)-based tests being practised by FPSC and provincial commissions is discouraging. Except CSS examinations, all tests are being conducted based only on MCQs. Many candidates aspiring for different government jobs find it unwise because MCQs are not a good way to gauge a candidate. It is amazing to see that service commissions are fostering a culture of cramming and rote-learning among candidates instead of encouraging them to read books.
Unlike MCQs, it is the theory-based test that helps assess the required competency. A few months ago the Sindh Public Service Commission conducted written tests for the post of lecturers (BPS-17) which consisted of only 50 MCQs. The rationale behind this is beyond comprehension.
