Recently, a couple committed suicide in the Badin district due to poverty. However, the suicide of Kewal Kohli, and his wife, Najoo Kohli, who had six children, did not get enough coverage, perhaps due to the fact that they were poor people.
Ironically, Badin is one of the richest districts of Sindh. It is fertile and suitable for growing rice, tomato, sugarcane and other cash crops but the poor still sleep with empty stomachs. This region has also witnessed major hydrocarbon discoveries. Approximately 9,541 barrels oil per day and 225 mmcfd gas are pumped from this region. It has coal reserves of 1.358 billion metric tons. Despite this vast mineral wealth, the poor of Badin are dying of hunger and thirst. The authorities and NGOs concerned are requested to provide shelter for the six orphaned children.
