DIR: A one-day workshop was organised by the Agriculture Department of Upper Dir to educate farmers about the importance of olive tree and its plantation process and use of modern agricultural machinery.

Upper Dir Deputy Commissioner Irfanullah Mehsud was the chief guest. District Nazim Sahibzada Fasihullah, Director, Olive Production Project Dr Fayyaz, agriculturists, farmers and local people attended the function.

Dr Fayyaz said the soil and climate in the Upper Dir were favourable for the plantation of olive. Other experts urged the farmers to plant olive as it was very expensive.

The speakers said the farmers should also grow various types of vegetables and crops as the land of Upper Dir was very rich and fertile for agriculture.

They said that farmers did not follow proper methods of agriculture and so they could not get a good amount of produce. The experts urged the farmers to shun the primitive methods of farming and adopt modern techniques in order to increase crop yield.

Irfanullah Mehsud said the workshop was held with the view to give a change to the farmers to learn about modern techniques and methods of farming. The district administration would facilitate the farmers despite having limited resources, he added. The official said that the farmers should introduce plantation of olive trees at the local level. The farmers in Upper Dir thanked the Agriculture Department for organising the workshop.
