This refers to the letter ‘Tough decisions’ (Feb14) by Dr. Najeeb A Khan. Once the country accepts the IMF programme, its hands are tied. The economic and financial policies as well as the budget guidelines will be framed by IMF managers and the country’s finance team ought to follow its direction. The government has no choice but to adhere to the IMF’s prescription, regardless of how damaging it appears to be.
It is for the above reason that this government should have looked for indigenous solutions instead of approaching the Fund and becoming subservient to its dictation. India, Malaysia, South Korea, Vietnam and Bangladesh have developed their economies without the IMF’s help.
